Goodbye Gary

Gary Gygax died today. If you ever rolled a die that wasn't a cube you know who that is and why it is worth mentioning. Before I found the courage to try to make what I want out of the real world his game provided me with the tools I needed to experiment with megalomania. Without Gary there would be no Vile. Thanks Gary. I owe you one.

D&D and the subsequent RPG industry that became possible because of its success (I am looking at you, World of Warcraft. You too, Square/Enix.) has been and continues to be a rallying point and common ground for sci-fi and fantasy fans everywhere. Mr. Gygax's passing has made me wonder what the world would be like if there had never been any D&D at all. Perhaps a futile endeavor, it isn't just the entertainment and video game industry that is flooded with its influence, and run by people who were inspired by their own gaming sessions.

The number of friendships made, jokes shared, and stories told over a set of oddly shaped dice and a character sheet cannot be counted. Nor should they be.

Mr. Gygax, we are in your debt. Your creation has given us the chance to retain some shred of our creativity in a world that seems designed to destroy it outright. Tonight, at my gaming session, we will drink to your memory. Requiescat In Pace.

I would now like to call for a moment of silence, 15' radius.

Were I a human and thus a being that drinks such liquid, I would pour a little Mountain Dew out on the curb for my boy Gygax. He was an OG- Original Gamer.
